Launch News

SquarePlay Games posted the line players had been waiting for: Monk Took Book hath launched. The paid Steam build went live on Thursday 3 September 2026, in the late afternoon in the United Kingdom. Alastair and Sarah did not treat the day as a silent store flip. They shipped a launch trailer they called definitely hilarious, hoped you would enjoy the abbey even if it rains, and left the free demo standing so novices could still try a handful of nights before paying.

This page is the wiki’s day-one record: what the store showed, what the news post said, and what you should do in the first hour after you own app 4022090. It is not a walkthrough. For the loop itself, use how to play and getting started. For the numbered demo work that still describes the island, use patch notes.

What the Abbot actually shipped

Monk Took Book is a cozy-creepy job sim about organising, stacking, and remembering hundreds of books in a haunted medieval monastic library. You play solo or online with up to three fellow monks. Every morning a barge delivers volumes with unique cover symbols and no titles. You invent a shelf language, spend Blessings on taller bays and new chambers, then ring the belfry and fetch exact tomes for the scribes before dawn. After dark, vermin, spirits, and beasts test that language. You can turn those threats down or off; the memory test stays.

Launch features on the Steam page match the island demo players already knew, expanded past a short stay:

  • Hand-crafted abbey, first- or third-person camera, physics stacking and long throws
  • Arachnophobia mode, granular enemy / pest / fire sliders, a book-rate control for a calmer day
  • Proximity voice, public and private lobbies, Steam invites, copy-paste join codes, in-game text chat
  • Full key rebinding, manual and autosave, FoV / headbob / gamma, window or fullscreen, widescreen
  • 52 Steam achievements and Steam Cloud
  • Steam Deck Compatibility listed as Playable
  • Partial controller support on the store card, with the later demo’s d-pad menus and auto-run present in the live build

English is the shipped interface and full audio language. There is no local split-screen. Hosting is online co-op on PC Steam. Confirm a desktop GPU on system requirements before you invite three friends onto an integrated laptop chip the store explicitly does not support.

Trailer, tone, and the two-week clock

The official release-date announcement trailer (embedded above) is the Abbot’s two-weeks-hence film from mid-August. The 3 September news post pointed players at a separate launch trailer and the rain gag. Watch either, then judge the game by a night in the stacks, not by a joke about weather. Press quotes on the store (GameDaily, ComicBuzz) called out the mix of memory, management, and light first-person action; they are flavour, not a score.

Steam opened with Positive reviews. That badge will move as more monks finish a week of nights. Do not treat seventeen day-one takes as a season-long grade. If you want a structured opinion with spoilers marked, read the wiki review after you have shelved a morning barge yourself.

The store also ran an introductory 10% off until 17 September 2026. That is a price window, not a content drip. Rooms do not unlock when the discount ends. If you are waiting only for a sale, the date is the one that matters. If you are waiting for a feature, read patch notes instead of watching the discount timer.

The demo remains, on purpose

The day-before news post said the demo shalt remain live. SquarePlay kept that promise. Steam app 4255310 is still downloadable. It still cannot join a paid lobby, because the App IDs differ. A brother on the demo and a brother who bought 4022090 will never share a checkout desk. Full explanation: demo versus full game.

That split is the most common launch-week support question. If someone pastes a lobby code into the wrong app, the code is not broken. They are standing on the other island. Send them the paid store page, not a second code.

First hour after you buy

  1. Verify Windows 10+ and a desktop Nvidia GTX 1050 4GB-class GPU (or better). Integrated and low-spec mobile laptop GPUs are unsupported.
  2. Set settings before the first barge: enemies, pests, fires, book rate, arachnophobia, FoV, headbob, gamma, Max Shadows, invert Y, toggle run, show monk names, mic.
  3. Learn the controls, including the camera swap and the fact that the rebind HUD updates during play.
  4. Walk the monastery map once in daylight: dock, hall tapestry, shelf sites, belfry, checkout, crypt shrines.
  5. Invent a shelf language with how to organize and the memory planner before you ring the bell.
  6. Spend Blessings with a plan: blessings, perk ranks, weapon ranks. Do not buy every shelf at the old mistaken flat cost; the 0.5.x fix starts shelves at four Blessings and climbs.
  7. If you host, read co-op and solo versus co-op. Four-player night time is about 55% of solo. That is a design number from 0.6.3.7, not a bug.
  8. Press F1 if something breaks. That feedback path is how the 0.5.x ladder, HUD, and shelf bugs were filed.

Official store, studio site, Discord, X, and support sit on official links. This wiki is unofficial. For a night-by-night path through the island, use the walkthrough. For combat that showed up in Next Fest — thieves, Viking ghosts, Perfect Parry, torch embers — use combat.

If you bought on day one, the abbey is already yours. The only clock left is the 17 September intro price, not a wishlist reminder, and the barge will not wait for a second trailer.
