Monk Took Book Updates Hub
Launch news, the still-live demo, and the demo-era notes that still describe the abbey.
Monk Took Book is out. SquarePlay Games (Alastair and Sarah) shipped the paid Steam build on Thursday 3 September 2026, late afternoon in the UK. This hub is the wiki’s map of that moment: what launched, what the free demo still is, and which public patch notes still explain the library you are walking through.
Use it when a Steam news post drops, when a friend asks whether the demo can join your lobby, or when a combat trick such as Perfect Parry sounds new because you last played in March. The pages below are recaps, not a live feed. We rewrite them when SquarePlay posts a numbered build or a launch announcement, not when a thumbnail changes.
What launched on 3 September
The paid game is Steam app 4022090. It is a 1–4 player online co-op library job on PC, with a solo path that uses the same Holy Island. Steam listed the launch build as Positive, with 52 achievements, Steam Cloud, and Steam Deck Compatibility: Playable. The store still marks controller support as partial, even though later demo work added full d-pad menu navigation, a virtual stick cursor, and an auto-run toggle. English is the shipped interface and full audio language.
Launch day also carried an introductory 10% discount through 17 September 2026. That clock is a store offer, not a content timer. The abbey does not lock rooms when the sale ends. If you want the human version of day one — trailer, price, achievements, and the joke about rain — read launch news. Pair it with the review if you are deciding after a single night in the demo.
Demo versus the paid app
The demo versus full game page exists because the free app did not vanish at midnight. Steam app 4255310 stays live. It still teaches the morning barge, cover symbols, shelf spending, the belfry, and a short run of nights. It cannot connect to full-game lobbies. Different App IDs means a demo monk and a paid monk never share a checkout desk, even if both of you are in the same Discord call.
Treat the demo as a placement exam. Five or six nights is enough to learn whether you enjoy stacking, remembering, and batting rats off a shelf. It is not a slice of the Legendary Collection with a paywall on night seven. When the island starts to feel small, buy the full game and host from 4022090. Do not gift a demo lobby code to someone who already owns the release.
How we file patch notes
SquarePlay’s last public numbered changelog before launch was demo 0.6.3.7, posted for Steam Next Fest in June 2026. That build is the grammar of the abbey most players now meet: extra book sizes, the Book Thief, Viking ghosts (Grunt, Raider, Berserker), Lord Fluffy, arachnophobia mode, non-pausing tutorial popups, torch embers, Perfect Parry, and the Torch Perk shrine. Four-player night time sits at about 55% of a solo clock, which is why a full party feels breathless even when nobody is lost.
Earlier 0.5.x hotfixes (0.5.5.1 through 0.5.7.4) are the reason F1 exists, why pests can show in daylight, why 16:10 HUDs stopped falling off the screen, and why a shelf no longer costs a flat six Blessings when it should start at four and climb. We do not paste every bullet. The patch notes page groups the work into Books, Combat, UI, and Netcode so you can find the line that matches the bug you just hit.
If you are here because a torch spat an ember onto a folio, jump to combat and the settings sliders that disable fires. If a friend dropped mid-night and rejoined, that stability pass lives in the netcode section of the notes, not in a hidden host command.
What to read with this hub
New abbots should not start in changelogs. Open getting started and the how to play loop first, then come back when a feature name from Steam news does not match the island in your save. How to organize and the memory planner explain why extra book sizes in 0.6.3.7 matter: more silhouettes means your shelf language has to scale. Controls cover the rebind HUD that now updates while you play. Co-op and solo versus co-op explain why the four-player clock is shorter, not broken.
Blessings, perks, and weapons did not wait for a post-launch balance manifesto. Use the players hub, blessings, perk ranks, and weapon ranks as living advice, then check this hub if SquarePlay retunes a shrine. The monastery map is the geography those notes assume. The walkthrough is the night-by-night path if you would rather not reverse-engineer a loading-screen beast.
Hardware and comfort options sit next door in the tools hub. Confirm a desktop GPU on system requirements before you blame a hitch on the 0.5.x loading-screen fix. Official storefronts, Discord, and support mail live on official links and the links hub. This wiki is unofficial; numbered text always yields to SquarePlay’s own post.
Keep this hub pinned beside Steam news. We rewrite the snapshot when SquarePlay posts a numbered build, not when a trailer thumbnail changes, and we will not pretend a recap is a hotfix.
Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers for novices tending the Holy Island library.
Is Monk Took Book released?
Yes. The paid Steam build launched Thursday 3 September 2026. This hub tracks that release, the still-live demo, and the last public numbered notes.
Where is the latest changelog?
Read patch notes for 0.6.3.7 and the 0.5.x hotfixes. SquarePlay had not posted a separate 1.0 bullet dump at launch beyond the launch news post.
Does the demo still work after launch?
Yes. App 4255310 stays live, but it cannot join paid lobbies. Details are on demo versus full game.
Did controller support change before release?
The store still says partial controller support. Demo 0.6.3.7 added full d-pad menu navigation, a stick cursor, and auto-run, which is why Deck play is listed as Playable. See controls.
What should I read if I only played the March demo?
Skim 0.6.3.7 on patch notes, then combat for Perfect Parry, thieves, and torch embers. Revisit settings for arachnophobia mode.
