Getting Started

Your first hour in Monk Took Book is a commute, not a boss fight. SquarePlay Games (Alastair and Sarah) released the Steam PC game on 3 September 2026. You arrive on Holy Island as a novice. The long job is the Legendary Collection. The short job, tonight, is pick up books at the dock, carry them uphill to the hall, unlock a shelf site with Blessings, place two books you can actually remember, ring the belfry, read the checkout desk, and deliver what the scribes asked. If your hands already disagree with the HUD, open Controls before you drop a stack on the stairs.

This page is the on-rails version of How to Play. It does not replace How to Organize Books. It exists so night one does not become a tour of every chamber, shrine, and shop.

From the dock to the hall

Dawn starts at the water. Unique illustrated books spawn in piles. They have no titles. Each cover is a symbol: an animal, a loaf, a saint, a shape, something you will have to name yourself. That is the entire information design. Do not wait for a tooltip with a name. There is not one.

Pick up a stack you can still walk with. Carry limit is a perk later; on hour one, pride is how books tumble into the tide. Follow the uphill path into the monastic hall. Brothers in a co-op lobby can split the pile, but on a first run one monk should finish a stack before another invents a second sorting rule.

Look at the hall before you spend anything. A tapestry lists book types. The HUD can show a running count of types, written like 90/101 when the collection is deep. On night one that fraction is small. Treat the tapestry as a legend, not as homework. If the machine is struggling already, stop and read system requirements. Windows 10 or newer, a desktop GTX 1050 4GB class GPU, no integrated graphics, English-only client. Hosting a public lobby on an unsupported GPU helps nobody.

Unlock a shelf and place two books

Shelf sites are locked until you spend Blessings. The Abbot fronts you enough to begin; you are not meant to unlock the whole nave before you have placed a volume. Buy one reachable bay in the hall, not a heroic tall stack you cannot see from the checkout desk.

Place two books on that bay with a rule you can say out loud. Interact, then right mouse, matching the demo videos. Watch the placement indicator: valid areas read clearly, overlap is how you manufacture chaos. Chonky volumes eat width. Half-books look tidy and then vanish into a gap you will not remember at Compline.

Two books is the tutorial contract. Ten books with no rule is how you donate Blessings back to the night. If you want a taxonomy, steal a single idea from How to Organize Books: animals on the left, food on the right, or colour blocks you can see while sprinting. Do not invent four rooms of logic before you have rung a bell. Ladders exist for a reason. Small and large ladders are tools, not decorations. If you bought height you cannot reach, you have already failed the first-hour economy.

Ring the belfry and survive checkout

When two books are seated and you are not still carrying the dock, go outside to the tower and ring the bell. That starts checkout. Canonical hours such as Vespers and Compline appear on the HUD. In the demo, a night could be talked about as 600 seconds; more players shorten the window, and a four-player lobby is about 55 percent of solo time. Do not invite three friends into hour one unless they have read co-op.

Read the checkout desk. Fetch the exact cover requested. Deliver it. Repeat until the desk is satisfied, then ring the belfry again to close. Finishing early is worth a speed bonus in Blessings. Closing with work unfinished can list books served and skip the payday. That is not a bug; it is the job. Night two may skip enemy spawns while the tutorial still has you. Do not learn from that calm. Rats, spiders, jumping spiders, rabbit archers, Viking ghosts, a Book Thief with green footprints, and a Green Abbot are all waiting in the full loop. If you want the memory game without the hauntings, open settings and reduce, increase, or disable enemies, pests, and fires. Arachnophobia mode replaces spider models with moving text. Combat remains optional for the rest of the save.

After the first Blessings

Spend the first payout like a librarian, not like an action hero. Blessings buy Strength (carry), Speed and Run recovery (the demo priced faster dash/run recovery around 30 Blessings), Carpentry, tool slots, max shelf height, and a torch perk that reduces ember chance. Rank those choices on the perk tier list and glance at weapons before you shop a crossbow you will never holster.

A dagger, crossbow, holy cross, torch, bucket, quill, and ladders will matter later. Lord Fluffy can be petted and helps with pests; the cat is not flammable, which is more than you can say for parchment. Perfect Parry dazes. Thrown books are legal. None of that is the first-hour test. The demo (app 4255310) stays live and cannot join full-game lobbies. Steam Cloud, 52 achievements, proximity voice, Y for text chat, and F1 feedback are already in the client. Rebind anything that fights you; HUD prompts update. For the wider loop after this script, return to the Guides Hub or jump to the walkthrough once rooms start unlocking.

Hour one ends when you have hauled once, unlocked one bay, placed two books you can still picture, rung the bell, served the desk, and spent Blessings on something that shortens tomorrow’s walk. Everything else on this wiki is for night three, when the dock pile is larger, the tapestry has more symbols, and nobody skips the vermin unless you asked the options menu to do it.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers for novices tending the Holy Island library.

What is the first-hour order in Monk Took Book?

Dock to hall, unlock one shelf site, place two books, ring the belfry, serve checkout, collect Blessings. Details sit in How to Play.

Night two felt empty. Is combat broken?

Night two may skip enemy spawns during the tutorial. Later nights can include pests and ghosts unless you change settings.

How do I place a book on a shelf?

Unlock a shelf site with Blessings, then interact and use right mouse, as demo videos show. Controls lists the rest of the verbs.

Should I disable beasts on night one?

If you came for memory, yes. Settings can disable enemies, pests, and fires. You can turn them back on after the loop is in your hands.

Can demo friends join my full-game lobby?

No. Demo app 4255310 cannot join purchased-game lobbies. Read demo versus full before you send a join code.

Any pair you can describe out loud. Steal one rule from How to Organize Books instead of filling the hall at random.
